Afternoon Tea - Wet Bulb Temperature
Lethal Saunas is the name of my thrash metal Beach Boys cover band.
Heat continues to fricassee the nation’s energy infrastructure, the other 31 flavors of infrastructure aren’t in great shape either, megadonors waste tons of money on New York elections, America was shocked when Syria, Iran, and Iraq called backsies, and if you’re 15-44, you’ve probably experienced more death in your cohorts than boomers or kids. It’s Tuesday, June 29th 2021, and this is your Tea.
Heat wave brings record-breaking temperatures north of Arctic Circle (ABC7) & How heat waves form, and how climate change makes them worse (Vox) How many years of temperature records being broken until we stop calling it record breaking heat? It’s almost as if climate change is real. A wet bulb temperature can be thought of as the effective minimum temperature your body can get to through sweat. Humanity taps out at a wet bulb temperature of 95F/35C, above that means if you’re drenched in sweat and still can’t drop your temp, you still might die with all the cold water you can drink and without moving, in the shade. Guess what happens when the power grid can’t handle the heat and people are forced to exist in 110F+ degree environments for multiple days?
US forces in Syria came under rocket fire, a day after US carried out airstrikes on Iranian-backed militias (CNN) So, we bombed some people in other countries a few days ago, and they bombed our forces in other countries back. Though from the way the headline is structured, you’d first think it was the opposite, wouldn’t you?
Young American Adults Are Dying — and Not Just From Covid (Bloomberg) Author of “The Myth of the Rational Market” & former editorial director of Harvard Business Review implores the world to give a crap about the deaths of Americans 15-44. As their outlook is not good and hasn’t been since the 50’s.
Why does it cost so much to build things in America? (Vox) & The Miami condo collapse is a devastating reminder of America's artificial land problem (The Week) “We used to make shit in this country. Build shit. Now we just put our hand in the next guy’s pocket.” ~Frank Sobotka, The Wire Season 2
Renting is Cheaper Than Buying Almost Everywhere (NY Times) There’s an aphorism used in the markets: When everyone is fearful be bold, when everyone is bold, be fearful. The market overheat around buying is definitely something to be mildly fearful about, especially if you’re just entering the buy side of the market. Take some time to let the bubbling cool down a bit. (Editor’s Note: Writer’s broke-ass opinions should not be taken as financial advice.)
Police Killed A "Good Samaritan" Who Fatally Shot A Gunman Who Had Killed A Cop (BuzzFeed News) & Lawmakers Sue N.Y.P.D., Saying They Were Beaten With Bicycles at Protest (NY Times) A good guy with a gun stopped a bad guy with a gun, only to be shot by the cops. I wonder if there is a class of person in this nation that the police can’t assault without consequence. Like if a NYPD cop accidentally groped AOC, or roughed up her campaign manager, would he be fired? Would he lose his pension, even if they had no reason to do what they did except her being the darling of the left?
Megadonors flooded the New York mayor’s race. Most of them wasted their money. (Politico) Conversely, this is why I laugh when out-of-state money tries to unseat AOC. You can spend millions to try and win NYC. I guarantee you’ll lose it all. Just think, VP McGuire has nothing, absolutely nothing to show for $6 million in outside spending. Think about how much was pumped through Yang to tentatively finish 4th?
How an “unqualified” 27-year-old Zimbabwean teacher created a top tutoring academy on WhatsApp (RestOfWorld) Life finds a way. But, can we get these people some free data plans? Does Kiva exist for data yet? Can I sponsor a sub-Saharan teacher or cop’s phone plan for like a dollar a month?
Inside the shady world of influencers promoting cryptocurrency (Mashable) Your favorite online media personalities hawking some obscure coin you’ve thought about buying? They were probably paid a startling amount of money.
U.S. Healthcare Is So Trash This Game’s Localization Needed Changing (Kotaku) I am not even going to try to summarize this one. We suck. So hard.
Yours,
